Marketers and small businesses love running Facebook ads because they yield fantastic results at a low cost.
Plus, Facebook ads are also really easy to run…right???
Did anyone out there (especially designers) only sigh?
Equally the Director of Marketing for a small business organisation, I am also the unabridged Section of Marketing, so I personally create our Facebook ads from strategy to design to implementation. As a Creative at heart, I enjoy the graphic pattern part of my job and however, I dread the days I have to spend designing anything for Facebook ads.
Yes, advertizing with Facebook is often very simple, but with the ever-irresolute and oft opaque creative requirements, things can go tricky and frustrating on the ad creation side. None of the following Facebook ad issues I've encountered are insurmountable by any means (and I'll show y'all how to work around them). Simply homo does it become frustrating (and kinda funny) sometimes.
Facebook Ad Neglect #1: The Pixel That Got Away
Have you ever tried to apply an image for an ad that wasn't exactly Facebook's "recommended" size? I take (on accident)! As you might imagine, information technology didn't go as well well.
My single prototype ad was rejected one time considering it was one pixel off from the recommended size. The toughest part of this wasn't so much that it was rejected but that there was no fault message or reason given for the rejection. Power Editor was only stuck and no affair how many times I tried uploading the image, the preview simply stayed blank.
To troubleshoot, I restarted Power Editor, re-created the campaign again from scratch, and tried a different browser – just nothing made a departure.
Finally, I checked my artistic and saw that information technology was 1200 x 627 pixels instead of the "recommended" 1200 x 628. When I adjusted the image, information technology loaded into my campaign perfectly Like Zippo HAPPENED.
I don't get mad about strict requirements on artistic; graphic designers are very used to that and creativity thrives under constraint; but, I do wish Power Editor would take given me a head's upwards most what was wrong.
How To Set up It: If something goes wrong during your ad creation and you can't figure out why, double check your creative to make certain information technology matches Facebook'due south recommended ad specs exactly.
Facebook Ad Fail #2: What Are Words?

Wait, what? Let me explicate. A few months agone I was creating a carousel ad to feature some of the best deals for our Christmas auction and I kept getting the "your advertizing may not run" fault message because there was "also much text" in it. I started to strip text, exam, strip more text, then examination over and over again until there was literally no text in the ad:

But past then I had figured out by trial and error that when I removed the snow graphic, my image (fifty-fifty with some real text in information technology) passed with no issues! In other words: the program was reading the snow as text.
How To Fix It: Contact Facebook ads back up via Power Editor. They're very helpful and nice! Also, afterwards that incident the Facebook text overlay tool has earned a coveted spot on my Chrome bookmark bar alongside heavy hitters like my Shopify login and Google Analytics. If yous aren't using that tool yet and yous put text in your ads, I highly recommend you cheque it out.
Facebook Advertizement Fail #3: Exceptions AKA Text On Product Images
We sell car stereos (among many other aftermarket motorcar accessories) and some of our best performing ads feature product images. If you think I tin can but drop in a nice beauty shot .png of the latest Apple tree CarPlay receiver into Photoshop and be on my merry way – think once more.
There is a LOT of text on a product epitome similar that and even though they say this should qualify for an exception, that has not (until recently) been my experience for our products. My workaround was to use a Gaussian mistiness on ALL of the text including the logo (ugh) on products like these:
But taking the text off of a multimedia receiver is a bad selection because the content on the product's screen is intrinsically tied to the appeal and value of the product! That is of course why Facebook made product images an exception, and even though those exceptions are supposed to be automatically applied, they were not in my case.
When I spoke to a very nice admirer at Facebook nearly the snowflake/text debacle I mentioned this effect to him as well. He basically told me that side by side fourth dimension I see that problem, to permit him know and he'd encounter what he could do. He never said he would (or could for that thing) do anything to help me account-broad or to prevent it from happening again.
Since that conversation however, I haven't had any problems with an ad getting rejected for having also much text when it features a text-laden car stereo receiver. Did they modify something on my account or to the ads software in general? Mayhap. Am I simply getting lucky? Perhaps. Is it my place (a mere mortal!) to question the vast mysteries of the Zuck? Probably not.
How To Fix It: If you know you accept an ad coming upwardly that will accept text in it but should authorize for an exception, start your advertising creation early in case you demand to contact Facebook ads support to get it resolved.
Facebook Ad Fail #4: Editing Boosted Posts on Instagram
One mean solar day I noticed that a boosted post was getting a lot of date on Instagram and I idea I'd change the link to a new optimized landing page I had just finished working on.
Should I have merely had the best link on in that location to begin with? Yes, of course I should have but that isn't ever how things become when you are a one-adult female marketing department (or even if you're not). Plus, remember that this is a post almost fails.
So here's what I learned from this particular Facebook fail. Y'all are allowed to edit your boosted post and alter the link on your ad but there'southward a take hold of. The Instagram advertizement preview in Ability Editor updates with your new link BUT information technology does not in fact change the link on your live Instagram advertizing. Boo. If you somehow forget the link entirely, y'all cannot go dorsum and add ane. Boo! Nonetheless, if y'all desire to change or add a link on a boosted post on Facebook information technology will really alter the link. Yay!
